This is a small book, but it speaks volumes about the dangers of the seeming global mind set regards present day China. On the surface, the first decade of the 21st Century saw China burst onto world’s economic stage and up on the big-board displays of financial centers around the globe. Its year after year GDP growth in the range of 10% continued to defy previously held economic theories; it also defies common sense, as this book will quickly show.
The term “present day China” is used here rather than “modern China” for a very specific reason. This choice of words speaks directly to the core concerns that prompted this book’s existence. China appears modern, but even a cursory look behind the scenes of China’s financial markets, substandard building bubble, and the opaque ruling ideology, and there emerges the possibility that much of the fast-growth economic wheels may be made of wood.

We have read on an almost daily basis, the conflicting and often contradictory stories on the Chinese economy, its growing military might, its assertivness in the South China Sea, etc. Trying to keep up with all the smoke and mirrors much less understanding what it all means has been difficult for me. EASTWORLD is just what the doctor ordered. It covered all the main issues that our foreign policy efforts will encounter in the next decades, but did so in a well ordered, well written short book that got even better with a second read.Dr. Dusenbury writes in a lively, intelligent style, frequently introducing information that has escaped our daily media, I had so many footnotes on my Amazon Kindle I figured it would be easier to just read it again, which I did with even more pleasure than the first time.

Good read on your travels. This book gives a brief and readable perspective on how many from the West are very mistaken in thinking that business in China operates on anything resembling western norms. it is a cautionary tale.
