Using Native Plants to Restore Community in Southwest Michigan and Beyond Nancy Cutbirth Small Tom Small 9780615529936 Books Reviews
If you are in Southern MI (the authors are based in Kalamazoo), this book is a necessity. Particularly useful are the lists of native plants by flowering month, by sun-lovers, by shade-lovers, and by height. If you have a suburban yard, they offer advice on how to transform it (as they did) into a safe haven for the other species, who use it as a home or for food, and on their migratory journeys. There is guidance on everything from large trees, small trees, shrubs, vines, wildflowers, grasses, and ferns - and information on what other species said plant supports (birds, pollinators, useful bugs, and more).
If you are trying to create a pollinator garden, this book is great. If you're trying to attract hummingbirds, they have that too.
There are many beautiful illustrations (a favorite, on page 3, is a cross-section showing the root systems of prairie plants - the blazing star aster flowers [aka gayfeathers] reach 15 down!). There's guidance on places to purchase native plants in MI and which plants need the most support.
Some key things I've gotten, so far support diversity, dead trees/branch piles make great habitats, plant a white oak (such as a bur oak, to try to dodge oak wilt disease). Remember your yard is an experiment in progress.
The only quibble I have with the book is a lack of an index at the end - its omission is something I hope will be added in a later version. There is simply so much useful information, it can be hard to find a place you read earlier when paging through. I can't fault the authors for this, as indexing is an art and expensive, and Nancy passed away before the book was published. Nevertheless, it makes the book harder to navigate. Luckily, it's chock full of citations to other books (which'll probably have indexes) for each bit of info.
Highly recommended. I wish more than 7 libraries in MI had this on their shelves.
